I'm not sure what you mean by "demonstrate a lack of clarity," but your best bet is to write a fantastic, realistic conversation in which the confusion is conveyed and acknowledged. Yes! You can start writing a book in the middle. Writing in the first person is, in my opinion, the most exemplary method to do it. Please take a couple of paragraphs from the middle of the story and place them at the start. Then have your character say something along the lines of, "I should probably explain who I am and why I'm doing whatever it is that character is doing in those pages." Make a tiny prelude chapter if you're writing in the third person (or don't want to follow the method above). Take a few paragraphs from the center of the story and divide them into separate chapters. This chapter is around 1–2 pages long and does not contain all of the information.
